Rafa Construction Stucco LLC
Stucco
Stucco is a desirable and convenient exterior finish for both residential and commercial properties due to its versatility, durability, and aesthetic appeal. It provides a clean, timeless look that can be customized with various textures, colors, and finishes to suit modern or traditional styles. Stucco is also known for its long-lasting performance, low maintenance requirements, and weather resistance. It helps protect buildings from harsh elements, as it resists fire, pests, and mold when properly installed.
Stucco systems are generally classified into three types: traditional stucco, synthetic stucco (EIFS), and the cement board stucco system. Each system has a unique composition and installation process, tailored to different performance requirements and building types. Traditional stucco relies on a layered cement-based application for strength and durability. Synthetic stucco incorporates insulation and flexible polymer layers for enhanced energy efficiency. Cement board stucco uses prefabricated panels as a base for quicker, more impact-resistant installations. Understanding the step-by-step procedures for each system helps ensure proper application and long-term performance.
Synthetic Stucco
Synthetic stucco (EIFS) consists of six layers, including an insulation board, fiberglass mesh, water-resistant base coat, and acrylic finish. Compared to traditional three-layer stucco, synthetic stucco offers superior thermal insulation, helping reduce energy costs. It’s also lighter, more flexible, and resistant to cracking, making it ideal for both residential and commercial projects. With its moisture protection, customizable finishes, and energy-efficient design, synthetic stucco is a modern, high-performance alternative to traditional systems.

Cement Board Stucco
Cement board stucco systems use cement boards as a solid, durable base for stucco application. The system typically includes the cement board attached to framing or masonry, followed by a mesh-reinforced base coat and a final acrylic or cementitious finish. This method combines the strength and stability of traditional stucco with the convenience and speed of panel installation. It offers faster construction, resistance to impact and moisture, and a clean, uniform finish. While less flexible in design than EIFS, it’s a reliable choice for both residential and commercial projects where durability and efficiency are priorities.
Traditional Stucco
Traditional stucco, also known as hard stucco or the three-coat system, is a time-tested method made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water, applied over a wire mesh. It is installed in three main layers: a scratch coat for bonding, a brown coat for leveling, and a finish coat for texture and appearance. At our company, we typically add an extra base coat with fiberglass mesh before the final color coat to enhance quality, durability, and crack resistance. Traditional stucco is especially valued for its strength, fire resistance, and soundproofing capabilities. Though it is heavier and offers limited insulation, it provides a durable and classic exterior finish that performs exceptionally well when properly applied and maintained. This system is most commonly used for residential and commercial foundations and steps, offering long-lasting protection and a timeless look.
